Claude Wayne "Smokey" Handy, 70 of Bedford, passed away Saturday, May 11, 2013 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was born on Tuesday, February 16, 1943 in Roanoke, a son of the late Frank C. Handy and Avis Louise Secrest Handy. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Minnie Biggs Handy. He was a retired employee of Sam Moore Furniture and a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church. He was also a veteran of the U. S. Army. Surviving are his daughters, Cheryl Harris & husband, Mike of Bedford, Janet Overstreet & friend, Craig Hannah of Craig Co.; a brother, Ray S. Handy & wife, Juanita of Botetourt Co.; two sisters, Ruth Deweese of Botetourt Co., Kathy Vann & husband, Barry of Vinton and three grandchildren, Michael Harris II, Holly & Annah Overstreet. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 15, 2013 at 2:00 PM at Updike Funeral Chapel, Bedford. Interment will follow in Montvale Baptist Church Cemetery. Friends may call Tuesday after 12 noon and the family will receive friends from 6 until 8 PM at Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.
