Obituary of Ruby Hawkins

Ruby "Nannie" Dobbins Hawkins Jesus called Ruby home to heaven at age 69 on Monday, July 8, 2013 in the University of Virginia Medical Center, Charottesville with her family by her side. She was preceded in death by her father, Elbert E. Dobbins and mother, Rosa Griffith Dobbins, two brothers, Kenneth Dobbins & Carl Dobbins and her in-laws, Enos C. Hawkins & Lois M. Hawkins. Ruby is survived by her husband of nearly fifty-two years, Jack Holdren Hawkins; sister, (Janice) Ruth Childress; brother, Eugene Dobbins; children, Debbie H. Akers, Gary A. Hawkins, Patrick W. Hawkins & wife, Shannon; grandchildren, Kristy A. Hawkins, Triston P. Akers, Kendal A. Akers, McKenzie K. Hawkins; great-grandchildren, Karmyn C. Hawkins Maddison A. Abbitt, Daisha R. Poe, Trinity J. Poe, Naomi K. Akers. In the early years of marriage, Ruby worked at the S & W Cafeteria in the Pittman Plaza. The friends she made there lasted a lifetime. Ruby became a stay at home mom after the birth of her third child. She was also a second mom and Nannie to many of her children and grandchildren's friends. As a mother she played, taught, guided, scolded and loved unconditionally, as "Nannie", she preferred the role. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren adored "Nannie." As a daughter-in-law, Ruby devoted many years to the care of her in-laws during their later years. To them, she was the daughter they never had. Ruby will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Friends are invited to meet the family at Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Perrowville Road on Thursday, July 11, 2013 at 11 AM with Rev. Wayne Murphy officiating for a christian burial. Family and friends may gather at the Hawkins home, 2649 White Road, Forest, VA immediately following the service. Arrangements are being handled by Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.
