Raymond E. Trail, Jr., passed away Saturday August 17, 2013 after a 16 year battle with cancer. He was born August 28, 1944 in Bedford, a son of the late Raymond E. Trail, Sr. and Clara Witt Trail. He was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church. After serving in the United States Navy, he returned to Bedford and worked for Bedford Wholesale Grocery, Inc. as a truck driver and then a salesman. After their closing, he worked for Citty Ford, Inc as a salesman and wrecker driver. He then became a dispatcher for the Bedford City Police Dept. and was transferred to the Bedford County Sheriff's office as a 911 dispatcher. After his retirement in 2006, he worked at Witt's Wholesale. He was a life member of the Bedford Volunteer Fire Dept. and a past Chief with 38 years of service. In his spare time he raced everything from round track, demolition derbys, drag racing, hydroplanes and go-karts. He loved fishing trips to the coast and auction sales. He also loved people. He was a kind man and a loving father and husband. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Edie Rae Trail; a son Raymond Edward (Eddie) Trail III; a daughter Katherin (Kathy) Trail Hatcher and her husband, Kevin; two grandsons, J. Kyle Hogan and his wife Shelly of Lexington, and H. Alex Trail; two step grandsons, Tyler Hatcher and Dylan Hatcher; one great grandson Ashly Gray Hogan of Lexington and a brother, Randy W. Trail and his wife, Shelby. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Bedford County Sheriff's Dept K-9 unit, 1345 Falling Creek Road, Bedford, VA 24523, for the care and training of their K-9s. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, August 21, 2013 at the Updike Funeral Home Chapel at 2:00 PM with the Rev. Mike Miller officiating. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, August 20, 2013 from 6 to 8 PM at the funeral home. Arrangements by Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.
