George Edward Updike, Jr., 64, of Bedford went home to be with his Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ on Thursday, September 5, 2013. He was the husband of Rebecca Angell Updike. Born October 24, 1948, in Altavista, he was the son of the late George Edward Updike, Sr., and Marian Phyllis Robins Updike. George was a loving son, husband, father, and brother. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two children, James Matthew Updike & his wife, Tammy, Angela Updike Pinder & her husband, David all of Roanoke; two sisters, Patricia Updike Gray & her husband, John of Bedford and his twin sister, Judy Updike Bates & her husband, David of Huddleston; mother-in-law, Edna Adkins Angell of Moneta; three sisters-in-law, Debora Lee Angell of Lynchburg, Donna Angell Morgan & her husband, Mike, Jamie Angell Rowland & her husband, Randy, all of Vinton; and eight nieces & nephews. Following graduation from high school, George was proud to serve his country in the U. S. Army, spending a year in Vietnam. He retired from Sam Moore Furniture of Bedford and Bedford County Public Schools. He was a member of Longwood Avenue Baptist Church. A funeral service will be held on Monday, September 9, 2013, at 11 AM at Updike Funeral Chapel, Bedford, with Pastor Ross Gilfillen officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery, Vinton. The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon from 3 until 5 PM at Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.
