Bernice Childress Johnson, 76 of Bedford, passed away Monday, October 14, 2013 at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital. She was born on Friday, March 12, 1937 in Washington Co., VA, a daughter of the late Hobart Childress and Mabel Wise Childress. She was also preceded in death by husband, James Edward Johnson, Jr., She was a retired Registered Nurse at Bedford Memorial Hospital. and was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church. Surviving is her daughter, Pamela J. Jemmison of Chesapeake; a son, Richard A. Johnson of Bedford; three grandchildren, Christian Lewis Jemmison, Taylor Alan Johnson, Finn Alan Johnson. The family requests those wishing to make memorials to consider Bernice Johnson Honorary Nursing Scholarship, c/o Bedford Memorial Hospital, 1613 Oakwood Street, Bedford, VA 24523. Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 18, 2013 at 2:00 PM at Main Street United Methodist Church with Rev. Bart Weakley & Rev. David Whitehurst officiating. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6 until 8 PM at Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.
