Obituary of Hazel Dalton

Please share a memory of Hazel to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Hazel Elaine Cundiff Dalton, 96, of Lynch Station passed away on November 21, 2013. She was born in Bedford County on July 30, 1917, the daughter of Clara Ward Farmer Cundiff and Thomas Shepard Cundiff. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Everett Dalton, one sister, Evie Goodman, and four brothers, Harry, Earl, Marvin, and Shirley. She was married to Everett for over 77 years. She is survived by four children - Jean (Aubrey) Wilson, Nancy Wiseman, Larry (Eula) Dalton, and Carl (Marcia) Dalton. Mrs. Dalton also enjoyed 7 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Mrs. Dalton enjoyed the title of Granny, and was quick to tell everyone "My name is Hazel, but you can call me Granny". She and Everett built and moved into their home on the farm in Leesville in 1938, and lived there until 2010. Due to declining health she moved to Runk and Pratt on Leesville Road, where she quickly became Granny to all the residents as well as the wonderful staff who cared for her with such kindness, compassion, and understanding of her health issues. Mrs. Dalton was a founding member of both Altavista Baptist Tabernacle and Friendship Baptist Churches. She cared for her mother for almost 20 years in her home and for many others as well. She was known for her quiet generosity to anyone in need. Her home was always open to all visitors who wanted to sit a while and enjoy a meal. She cared for and loved all children, and regardless of what the children might do, she would dismiss it just a comment - "Well, they are just children." Funeral Services will be held on Sunday, November 24, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. at Updike Funeral Chapel, Huddleston. Burial will be in Leesville United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Sunday prior to the service beginning at 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Friends may also visit their home at 5863 Bedford Highway as well as the homes of her children. If desired, memorials may be made to Altavista Baptist Tabernacle and Friendship Baptist Church. Arrangements are being handled by Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Huddleston.
