Stephen Owen McCarty, 63 of Bedford, passed away Thursday, December 26, 2013 at his residence. He was born on Friday, April 7, 1950 in Ohio, a son of Nora Lee Castle McCarty of Ohio, who survives and the late Billie McCarty. He was a purchasing agent with Asheville Packing. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Debi Jo Carpenter McCarty; two daughters, Heather Joann Hucks & husband, Ryan of Trinity, NC, Angela Marie Constantine Carey of Bedford, three grandchildren, Conner Nelson, Michael Carey, Payton Hucks; two sisters, Diana Hankie of OH, Teri Hooper of SC and a brother, Doug McCarty of CA. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Gideons International, Bedford County Camp, P. O. Box 791, Bedford, VA 24523 or the American Cancer Society, 2050 Langhorne Road, Suite 201, Lynchburg, VA 24501. Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 30, 2013 at 2:00 pm at Updike Funeral Chapel, Bedford. Interment will follow in Virginia Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Monday beginning at 12 noon until the time of the service at Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.
