Alice "Jane" Ayers Hale, 85 of Bedford, passed away Sunday, December 29, 2013 at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born on Friday, June 15, 1928 in Bedford County a daughter of the late Moses P. Ayers and Ollie Jane Overstreet Ayers. She was also preceded in death by 2 sisters and 5 brothers. She worked for years at Belding Corticelli Silk Mill in Bedford and loved to work in her yard. She was a member of Quaker Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband of 65 years, Carey Goggin Hale, 2 daughters, Debbie H. Merritt & her husband Wesley G., and Kathy H. Watts; grandson, Dustin A. Watts; brother, Tom Ayers & wife Delores and numerous nieces & nephews. The family requests that in lieu of flowers please consider donations to Quaker Baptist Church 4665 Chestnut Fork Road Bedford, VA 24523 or Alan B Pearson Regional Cancer Center1701 Thomson Dr, Lynchburg, VA 24501. Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, January 1, 2014 at 11:00 am at Quaker Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev.Wayne Murphy and Rev. David Timma officiating. Friends may call after 1 PM and the family will receive friends Tuesday December 31 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the funeral home. The family would like to thank Dr. Oldhom and his staff at the Alan B. Pearson Cancer Center for their kindness and care. Arrangements are being handled by Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service
