Eugene Lewis Payne, 77 of Moneta, passed away Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at his residence. He was born on Thursday, November 26, 1936 in Bedford County, a son of the late Robert J. Payne and Hester Mary Jacobs Payne. He was also preceded in death by his granddaughter, Jacquilin Marie Johnson. He was a toolmaker/machinist with General Electric in Salem, was a member of the Lions Club, Odd Fellows, a member of Thrasher United Methodist Church and was a Charge Lay Speaker for Lynchburg District. He was also a veteran having served in the U. S. Army. Surviving is his wife, Vera Guilliams Payne; three daughters, Toni Gail Custer & husband, Larry of Ferrum, Carrie Lynn Eanes & husband, Dale Eugene of Moneta, Vanessa Leigh Payne of Moneta; four sisters, Thelma Divers & husband, Roscoe of Bedford, Hazel Mitchell of Moneta, Mamie Crouch & husband, Jay of Montvale, Mary Booze & husband, Herbert of Chamblissburg; two brothers, Thomas Payne & wife, Hazel of Moneta, Wallace Payne & wife, Dorothy of Bedford, two grandchildren, Courtney Martin & Ashley Payne, seven great grandchildren & one on the way. The family requests those wishing to make memorials to consider Threasher United Methodust Chuch, 707 East Washington Avenue, Vinton, VA 24179 or the charity of your choice. Funeral services will be held at the graveside on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at 10:00 am at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens with Rev. JaeYong JY Daniel Song. There will be no visitation at the funeral home but the family will receive friends at the residence. Arrangements are being handled by Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.
