James Bennett Witt, Sr., 79 of Bedford passed away Saturday, April 12, 2014 in Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was born May 1, 1934 in Bedford County, a son of the late Alan M. Witt and Clara Howerton Witt. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Harry Beckham Witt. He was a retired employee of Rubatex and Bedford County Public Service Authority and was a member of Bedford Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Edith Smallwood Witt; two sons, James B. Witt, Jr. & wife, Michelle, Wendell Allen Witt & wife, Susan all of Bedford; grandchildren, James Bartels (Sarah), Kimberly Catley (Daniel), Alan Witt (Lindsay), Carter Witt & Sarah Witt; great grandchildren, Jameson Cole Bartels, Levi Austin Bartels; a sister, Rosa Griffin of Buffalo Junction, VA; two brothers, Allen Thomas Witt & wife, Jean, Wayne Howerton Witt & wife, Brenda, all of Bedford as well as numerous nieces & nephews. The family request that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Bedford Christian Ministries, 217 West Washington Street, Bedford, VA 24523. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, April 16, 2014 at 2 PM at Updike Funeral Chapel, Bedford with Dr. David Henderson officiating. Interment will follow in Quaker Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 until 8 PM at Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.
