Obituary of Harry Lowell Schickling

Harry Lowell Schickling was born on May 24, 1938, in Cochranville, PA. He lost a valiant fight with cancer on June 15, 2014. As a boy, he was raised on a dairy farm where he first learned to drive a John Deere Model L tractor. As a young adult, he served in the Navy for 4 years as a Fire Control Technician. He married his beautiful bride, Nancy Harmony Schickling and settled in Florida, where he was employed by Honeywell, as an Electrical Engineer. He moved his family to Charleston, SC and worked in Civil Service for the Navy in Mine Warfare and Submarine tactics with Polaris subs. He and his family served with the Navigators Christian Servicemen’s Ministry. As an alumnus of Charleston Southern University, he held several degrees and later served on the Board of Visitors. He moved to Bedford, VA in 1979 and purchased the family farm now shared by his daughter and son. His career with RBX Corporation started with computers and then later as Vice President Administration and Corporate Secretary until 2005. He was currently employed as General Manager at Fostek in Bedford. Throughout his life, he had many entrepreneurial endeavors from shuffleboard supplies and a coffee service to his current endeavor with HarNan Consulting, a financial consulting business. He has been active in local government and the Chamber of Commerce for many years. This year, he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement award from the Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce. His wife, Nancy preceded him in death on January 27, 2014. Harry is survived by his daughter, Mauna and her husband, Jeff Hair; son, David and wife, Cheryl Schickling; grandchildren, Jennifer Hair, Susanna Simmons and Timothy Robinson; and great-grandchildren, Savannah Schickling, Mina Simmons and Lily Simmons. There are many other close family members, almost family members and close friends that he deeply loved and cared for. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society, 2050 Langhorne Road, Suite 201, Lynchburg, VA 24501. A memorial service to celebrate Harry’s life will be held on Wednesday, June 18, 2014 at 1 p.m. at Updike Funeral Chapel in Bedford, with Dr. Bob Moore officiating. The family will receive friends on Wednesday beginning at 11 a.m. and until the time of the service at Updike Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Bedford.
