Sylvia Carol Humphreys Stubblefield, 77, of San Antonio, TX passed away peacefully on September 9, 2014 following a long, brave battle with Parkinson’s disease. She was born on November 4, 1936 to Russell Anderson Humphreys and Gladys Stull Humphreys in Covington, VA. The family spent several years in Lynchburg, VA before settling in Villamont, VA. After graduating from Montvale High in 1954, Sylvia attended Radford Women’s College. There, she pledged Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority and earned a Bachelors of Arts degree in Education. She met Robert “Bob” Stubblefield and they married in 1959. Sylvia and Bob lived in 7 states before settling in Houston, TX in 1974. Divorced in 1984, Sylvia moved to Richmond, VA where she lived until retiring in 2001 from the law firm of McGuire, Woods, Battle & Boothe as Executive Assistant to Senior Partner Raymond Scannell. She then moved to New York to be closer to her eldest son, Allen, and his family. She enjoyed many years of retirement in both New York and Southern California before moving to San Antonio, TX in 2013 to be closer to her son, Stephen, and his family. Sylvia often said how proud she was to be a Mother and Grandmother. She felt motherhood was her greatest accomplishment and that continued with her being a doting grandmother to 8 grandchildren. Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents and infant son, Scott Michael. She is survived by her children, Allen (Kim) Stubblefield of Fullerton, CA; Stephen (Bonnie) Stubblefield of San Antonio, TX; Lisa Barta of San Antonio, TX; and Brian (Mary) Stubblefield of Cedar Rapids, IA; eight grandchildren: Caitlin, Patrick, Amy, Kristen, Brian Jr, Henry, Lillian and Symon; brother, Robert (Genny) Humphreys of Bedford, VA; and sisters, Betty (Robert) Giles of Montvale, VA; and Linda (Donald) Zimmerman of Bedford, VA; as well as her aunts, Louise Stull Humphries and Ruby Stull; and many cousins and friends. A memorial service for Sylvia will be held at Villamont Presbyterian Church in Villamont, VA at 11am on November 8th, followed by a luncheon. The interment will be at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Roanoke, VA at 2:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, it was Sylvia’s request that donations be made to The Michael J Fox Foundation For Parkinson’s Research, Grand Central Station, P.O. Box 4777, New York, NY, 10163-4777; (800) 708-7644; www.michaeljfox.org <http://www.michaeljfox.org/>, to help find a cure for this devastating disease.
