Mary Cocke Lawrence, 83 of Bedford, passed away Thursday, August 26, 2010 at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital. She was born on Friday, January 21, 1927 in Baltimore, MD, a son of the late Sherman Haines Burton and Ida Belle Dickerson Burton. She was also preceded in death by her husbands, Curtis Odell Cocke and Gordon Robert Lawrence. She was a member of Mt. Hermon Baptist Church. Surviving are her sons, Donald Odell Cocke & wife, Patricia of Big Island, Johnny Cocke of Bedford, Curtis Cocke of Pulaski, Wesley Cocke of Bedford; two daughters, Barbara Jean Sims & husband, Kenneth of Bedford, Anna Marie Hood & husband, Tim of Rocky Mount, her step-son, Larry Lawrence of Roanoke; step-daughter, Leah Ann Kendrick of Roanoke; brothers, Raymond Burton, Jack Burton, James Burton all of Bedford, Ernest Burton of Madison Heights, Sherman Burton, Jr. of Boones Mill, Clarence Burton of Troutville; a sister, Bessie Markham of Big Island; 13 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, August 29, 2010 at 3:00 PM at Mt. Hermon Baptist Church with Rev. Julie Flores and Rev. Eugene Campbell officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Hermon Baptist Church Cemetery. Friends may call Saturday after 11 AM and the family will receive friends from 6 until 8 PM at Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.
