Obituary of John Milhous

Please share a memory of John to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
John David Mishous, beloved husband of Carol Ann Milhous for 53 years, died at the age of 77 in Amherst on Saturday, August 21, 2010. He was born in Plainfield, Indiana, to the late David and Ruth Milhous. In addition to his wife Carol, John is survived by their three children, Mark Milhous and wife Suzanne, Marci Brown and husband Tom, and Melissa Batman and husband John, as well as 11 grandchildren, David, Alexandra, and Victoria Milhous, Ruthie Tucker, Daniel and Aaron Brown, Joshua, Kaleb, Benjamin and Anna Batman, and Natalie Barton and husband James. He is also survived by two brothers, Robert Milhous and wife Gail, Paul Milhous and wife Mary Ann, both of Florida, his sister Nancy Wilson and her husband John of South Carolina, and many nieces and nephews. John graduated from Purdue University in 1955 with a degree in Electrical Engineering, then served his country as an officer in the U.S. Air Force flying F86 fighter jets until 1959. He moved to Amherst in 1965 to work for American Cyanimid in Piney River, and for the past 35 years has been the president of Milhous Company, an engineering firm located in Amherst. His most cherished pastimes were flying, sailing, fly-fishing and especially spending time with his grandchildren. He loved a rousing family game of euchre and could often be heard saying, with a twinkle in his eye, "superior skill and cunning always win out over ignorance and superstition." John was an adoring husband, loving father and loyal friend - he will be greatly missed by all who knew him and loved him. His legacy will live on in their rich memories of his infectious laugh, teaching spirit, and playful heart. John was a dedicated believer in Jesus Christ and strove throughout his time on earth to live a life glorifying to the Lord. He was even known to try to sing within his one-note range, provided the words weren't too complicated. John's greatest desire was that his children and grandchildren would follow the Lord. The family would like to thank those who have supported them during this time with such grace and strength. Special thanks go to the wonderful team at Blue Ridge Community Church. A celebration of John's life will be held at Blue Ridge Community Church in Forest, VA on Friday the 27th of August at 7:30pm. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. In lieu of flowers the family has requested donations to be given to Blue Ridge Community Church at 2361 New London Road, Forest, VA 24551 in care of the Milhous/Weber Trust to support the Mission Aviation Fellowship. Arrangements by Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.
