James Monroe Brown, Sr., 80 of Bedford went to be with the Lord on Friday, September 4, 2015 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital surrounded by his loving family as he went to his eternal home. He was born September 20, 1934 in Roanoke. He was preceded in death by his mother, Angie Pearl Saunders & step-father, Clinton Saunders as well as his beloved son, James Brown, Jr. and brother-in-law, Don Robertson.
He worked for many years at Rubatex Corp. and was a dedicated newspaper carrier delivering the Roanoke Times. He took pride in his work and delivered the paper in rain, snow or sleet every day. His customers said you could set a clock by his punctuality and he never missed a day delivering in his forty years. James will be remembered for being the foundation of our family, the rock on which we lean. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He was also a U. S. Navy Veteran having served during the Korean Conflict.
He is survived by his loving wife of fifty-eight years, Stella Tuck Brown; his daughter, Debbie McCulley & husband, Mark of Roanoke; daughter-in-law, Terry Brown of Vinton; his grandchildren, Mike Brown (Kim Kersey) of Evington, Cassie Foster (Ryan Brush) of Raleigh, NC; Joanna Brown (Aaron Wiseman) of Roanoke, Kecia Purser & husband, David of Roanoke, Ashley King & husband, Anthony of Roanoke & Sophie McCulley of Roanoke; a special great grandchild, Penelope Brown of Evington; a brother, Kenneth Saunders of Lynchburg; sisters, Betty Ashwell & husband, Boyce of Huddleston and Patsy Robertson of Moneta. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
Funeral Services will be held on Monday, September 7, 2015 at 12 noon at Updike Funeral Chapel, Bedford with Rev. Marc Reynolds officiating. Interment will follow in the Tuck Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday from 3 until 5 PM at Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.
