Obituary of Ernest Weber Ryan

Ernest Weber Ryan, 87 long time resident of Bedford and formerly of Fairfax County, died Thursday, January 14, 2016. He was born on Monday, November 5, 1928 in Paterson, NJ, a son of the late Frank J. Ryan and Wilhelmina Weber Ryan. He is survived by his wife of sixty-four years, Florence P. "Perkie" Ryan; a son, Thomas S. Ryan (Debbie) of Hampton; a daughter, Melinda "Mindi" R. Montoro (John) of Midlothian; three grandchildren, Patrick S. Ryan (Angela), Carami Ann Montoro, Christian R. Montoro and his great-grandson, Jackson S, Ryan. He is also survived by his sister, Dorothy Ryan Unrath and his brother, Jack Ryan (Maryann) as well as numerous nieces & nephews. He was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II and a retiree of the Central Intelligence Agency. He attended Madison College and did graduate studies at Lynchburg College. Following retirement and relocation to Bedford, he served on the Board of Trustees of Main Street United Methodist Church, Bedford County Memorial Hospital and the Bedford Community Health Foundation. He also served on the Advisory Council of the Central Virginia Planning Commission, participated in the Region 2000 Industrial Development Program, served for a number of years as a D-Day volunteer and was a past member of the Bedford Host Lions Club and the Bedford Elks Lodge. The family requests no flowers, but memorials may be made to Main Street United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 505, Bedford, VA 24523. A funeral service, with military honors by Virginia Army National Guard Honor Guard, will be held at the graveside on Saturday, January 16, 2016 at 10 AM at Greenwood Cemetery with Rev. Wayne Murphy and Rev. Richard Ecklund officiating. The family will receive friends one half hour prior to the service at the graveside. Arrangements are being handled by Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.
