Obituary of Almytta Edith Powell

Almytta Edith Duffy Powell, 81 of Bedford, passed away Sunday, February 28, 2016 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. She was one of eight siblings, born on Saturday, October 6, 1934 in Endicott, NY, a daughter of the late Anthony Martin Duffy and Evelyn Blanche Downey Duffy. She was also preceded in death by a her husband, Foster Grant Powell, Sr., a son, Foster Grant Powell, Jr., her daughter, Deborah Powell Stoyk. She was a longtime resident of Endicott, NY and attended school at Owego Academy. She worked as a nursing assistant and later as a social worker at the Central Virginia Commission on Aging in Lynchburg. She also did private duty nursing and continued in her role as a homemaker until her passing. She had great character. She taught bible school and was very charitable. She received many awards and achievements. She enjoyed the company of her cats and loved planting flowers and gardening, watching nature and birds of all kinds. She also enjoyed crafting. Her fondest memories were of her family. Her church family was Blue Ridge Church of Christ. She is survived by her daughters, Penny Marie Champaign & husband, Richard, Heather Powell Madison & husband, Jeffrey, Sr., all of Bedford; her son, Timothy Dale Powell, of the home; two adopted children, twelve grandchildren, five adopted grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, her sister, Merrie Ross of Canton, GA. Flowers are welcome or donations can be made to Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service to help cover her funeral expenses. Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 4, 2016 at 12:00 pm at Updike Funeral Chapel, Bedford with Minister Brent Paskal officiating. Interment will follow in Holy Land Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 10 am until the time of the service at Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.
