Obituary of Bettie Bailey Ferry

Bettie Olive Bailey Ferry ascended to heaven on Sunday, March 6, 2016 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke, VA. She was born on February 26, 1927 in Jane Lew, WVa to Claude Bailey and Matie Bargerhuff Bailey. She had two older brothers, Jed and Jack Bailey both service veterans. She received her schooling in Lumberport, WVa, graduating from Lumberport High School in 1944 where she was a member of the orchestra and marching band. Following graduation she entered nurses’ training and became a member of the Nurse Cadet Corps. She attended Nursing School at St. Mary’s Hospital before graduating from Union Protestant Hospital, both in Clarksburg, WVa. She was employed as a Registered Nurse at Union Protestant Hospital (Clarskburg), Charlotte Memorial Hospital (now Carolina’s Medical Center) as well as Presbyterian Hospital and Wesley Nursing Center all in Charlotte, NC Her experience as an entrepreneur included owning Fountain Florist in Charlotte, NC and Village Accents of Moneta, VA. Bettie was an active member of Morgans Baptist Church, serving as a member of the nominating committee and supporting many church activities and functions. For 37 years, she was the devoted wife of Robert A. (Bob) Ferry who preceded her in death only 4 months earlier. They lived together at High Point on Smith Mountain Lake before relocating to Bedford. Bettie is survived by her children Tim McCune (Chris) of Charlotte, NC and Sally Biggers (Garry) of Black Mountain, NC and by her grandsons, Brad Biggers (Whitney and daughter, Amelia) of Decatur, GA and Matthew Biggers (Samantha) of Canton, NC. Additionally, she is survived by her step-children Robert D. Ferry (Becky) of Gaithersberg, MD, Diane Burger of Pittsburgh, PA and David Ferry (Jenny) of Pittsburgh, PA. She will be missed by her many customers, friends and neighbors throughout the community. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, April 16, 2016 at Morgans Baptist Church, Moneta, VA at 1:30 in the afternoon. Arrangements are being handled by Updike Funeral Home, Bedford.
