Odette Allen Cowan, 99 of Bedford, passed away Monday, April 25, 2016 at Carriage Hill Retirement Home. She was born on Saturday, September 16, 1916 in Danville, a daughter of the late John R. Allen, Sr. and Lillian Martin Allen. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Will C. Cowan, Sr., her brother, John Allen, Jr., and her granddaughter, Jennifer Cowan.
She was a retired school teacher in Pittsylvania County after having graduated from Averitt College and Lynchburg College. She was a charter member of Piney Forest United Methodist Church and after its closure was a member of S. Luke's United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her son, Will C. Cowan, Jr. of Panama City, FL; her daughter, Leigh C. McIvor of Lynchburg; her grandchildren, Tracy Saint Maxens, Elizabeth A. McIvor, Will C. Cowan III & Donna Dickerson as well as eight great grandchildren.
The family requests those in lieu of flowers those wishing to make memorials to consider Bedford Lifesaving Crew, P. O. Box 161, Bedford, VA 24523.
Funeral services will be held at the graveside on Wednesday, April 27, 2016 at 1:00 pm at Mountain View Cemetery, Danville with Rev. Susan Hannah officiating.
Arrangements are being handled by Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.
