Alvin Leroy Nichols, Jr., 83 of Bedford, passed away Tuesday, October 26, 2010 at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital. He was born on Sunday, February 13, 1927 in Bedford Co., a son of the late Alvin Leroy Nichols, Sr. and Jennie Lou Roberts. He was also preceded in death by four brothers, Basil Nichols, Travis Nichols, Ray B. Nichols and Troy Lee Nichols and three sisters, Agnes Guthrie, Inez Baber and Lorene Dare Johnson. He was retired from the U. S. Air Force and Bedford County Public Schools and was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church. Surviving is his wife, Anna Lashutka Nichols; four sisters, Isabelle N. Hughes of Bedford; Katherine Wood of Huddleston; Mary Ann Wade of Hampton; Barbara Jane Padgett of Roanoke. The family requests no flowers and are asking those who wish to make memorials to consider American Heart Association, P. O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, VA 23058 or the Alzheimer's Association, 1022 Commerce Street, Lynchburg, VA 24504. Funeral services, with military honors by American Legion Post # 16, will be held at the graveside at Bethesda United Methodist Church Cemetery on Saturday, October 30, 2010 at 11 AM with Rev. Les Trail and Rev. Tammy Franklin officiating. Arrangements are being handled by Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.
