Mary Sue Duncan Newman, 98 of Bedford, went to her eternal home on Monday, October 25, 2010. She was born on Saturday, August 3, 1912 in Franklin Co. VA, a daughter of the late Charles Wesley Duncan and Mary Mattox Duncan. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Chester Conley Newman of Bedford, where they lived for sixty years. She was also the sister of the late William E. Duncan, John Wesley Duncan and Annie Duncan Shelor. Mary Sue worked as a Dental Assistant for Dr. Cecil, Dr. Repass and Dr. McHan for thirty years. The last few years Mary Sue lived at the Elks National Home where she had many friends and always enjoyed a party. She lived a happy life and never met a stranger. She loved her home, enjoyed her flowers and also doing many cross stitch pieces. Surviving is her brother, Col. C. Henry Duncan of Valdosta, GA; two nieces, Jane Kern Duncan of Atlanta, GA; Debbie Wilder of Thomasville, GA; three nephews, Mac Shelor of Vinton; William (Bill) Duncan, Jr. of Franklin, TN; Malcolm Duncan of Margo, CA; as well as several cousins who loved her. She was loved and care for by a niece and her husband, Shirley & Sam Stiltner. The family requests those wishing to make memorials to consider Elks National Home, c/o Special Care Nurses, 931 Ashland Avenue, Bedford, VA 24523. The family will receive friends Wednesday, October 27, 2010 from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm at Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 13, 2010 at 11:00 AM at Mountain View Union Church, Millers Lane (next road after Moose Lodge on Route 460) with Rev. Bob Sowder officiating.
