James Wilson Updike, Sr., age 86 of Bedford, passed away Sunday, December 18, 2016 in Bedford Memorial Hospital. He was born June 11, 1930 in Bedford County, a son of the late Mack Hamilton Updike, Sr. & Flora Overstreet Updike.
He was a retired electrician with Davis H. Elliott, a member of Morgans Baptist Church, a sixty year member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and a fifty year member of the Bedford Masonic Lodge # 244, Liberty Masonic Lodge # 95 and a member of Liberty Chapter # 109, Order of the Eastern Star.
He is survived by his loving wife of sixty-four years, Shirley Franklin Updike; sons, James W. Updike, Jr. & wife, Marilyn of Bedford, Ronald Bruce Updike & wife, Kathy of Bedford; four grandchildren, four great grandchildren; a sister, Georgianna U. Tuck of Bedford.
The family requests that those wishing to make memorials consider the charity of your choice.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, December 21, 2016 at Morgans Baptist Church with Rev. Wayne Murphy and Rev. Jason Arthur officiating.
Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6 until 8 PM at Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.
