Obituary of Betty Maxey Mayhew

Betty Ester Maxey Mayhew, 82 of Bedford, loving wife, mother, Nanny and friend, left us to rest in the arms of her Jesus, surrounded by her family on Saturday, January 14, 2017. She was born September 25, 1934 in Bedford County, a daughter of the late Wilbur “Parks” Maxey & Belah Wilson Maxey. She was also preceded in death by her step-mother, Beulah Maxey, an infant daughter, an infant granddaughter, Ariel Lynch, her grandson-in-law, Butch Payne, three brothers and four sisters. Mama had a love for gardening, especially her flowers, crocheting & reading. She was a member of Mt. Olivet United Methodist church on Joppa Mill Road in Bedford. She is survived by her beloved husband of sixty-three years, Lewis A. Mayhew; her loving children, Donna M. (Billy) Hamlett, JoAnne M. (Kirk Sr.) Lynch, Gary L. (Linda) Mayhew, Tammy M. Dowden (friend, Wayne) Tracey M. Davis (friend, Larry); grandchildren, Tara, Crystal, Mia, Micah, Kirk Jr., Kamri, Ashley, Samantha, Sara, Jared, Joshua, Jacob & Paige; sixteen great grandchildren, one great great grandson and two special foster grandsons. She is also survived by her special in-laws, numerous nieces, nephews & friends. The family would like to express our deepest appreciation to her special caregivers, Brooke Blazer (niece), Jessica Field, Ann English, Centra Hospice Staff & Sylvia Hall, Hospice, CNA. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 17, 2017 beginning at 11AM at Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford and a funeral service will follow 1:00 PM in the chapel with Rev. Wayne Murphy, Rev. David Timma & Pastor John Hester officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. At other times, the family will be at the home of Donna, 1247 Quaker Church Road, Bedford. Arrangements are being handled by Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.
