Obituary of Shirley Bramlett McCabe
Shirley Bramlett McCabe, of Thaxton, daughter of the late Jesse Walter Bramlett and Maggie Stevens Bramlett & sister of the late Mildred Zimmerman passed away on Thursday, November 1, 2018. She is survived by her husband of fifty-eight years, James Weeks McCabe; two children, Kimberly McCabe and Matthew McCabe (Carla); four grandchildren, Mason McCabe, Jessica Grassano, Caroline McCabe and James "Mac" Grassano as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Shirley was a graduate of Stewartsville High School, Radford University and Lynchburg College, and a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother. However, she is best known by the residents of the county as Mrs. McCabe from Liberty High School where, for over three decades, she served as a teacher and guidance counselor for thousands of Bedford County graduates. After retiring from Liberty High School, Shirley continued to be concerned with the educational needs of the county as she served as a member of the Bedford County School Board for an additional sixteen years.
For over 50 years, Shirley attended Epworth United Methodist Church in the Thaxton community where she lived. She was a member of the Saunders Grove Church of the Brethren as well as many professional organizations.
The family requests that memorial donations be made to Epworth United Methodist Church, 1145 Penicks Mill Road, Thaxton, VA 24174 and/or the Alzheimer's Association, 1022 Commerce Street, Suite 3C, Lynchburg, VA 24504. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the staff of English Meadows (Bedford Elk's National Home)
A funeral service will be held at 11 AM on Monday, November 5, 2018 at Updike Funeral Chapel, Bedford with Rev. June Carpenter officiating. Interment will follow at 1 PM in Evergreen Burial Park. The family will receive friends from 4 until 6 PM on Sunday at Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.
