Very sorry for your loss.
Dick to me was like a second father. I can remember as a kid him telling to do the right thing. Stop hanging with the bad kids. He had a big heart and tried to do for me what he would do for his own. He worked hard providing for his family which was no small task. When he was about to retire I remember him going back and forth to Virginia to build his retirement home on Smith mountain lake for him and Noreen. A beautiful place I was able to visit a couple of times and when I did they made me feel like family. Dick was one of the best men I’ve known in life and I will surely miss him.
May you Rest In Peace
Love you all
Frank Sanford

I shared this at the funeral but wanted to have it in writing
My father and I were close growing up I followed in his footsteps as a heavy equipment operator he taught me many things that have proven to be successful to this very day
he always told me if you want something you have to work for it nobody's going to give it to you and when you work work hard be on time and do your best no matter who you're working for or how much you're making take whatever they throw at you and do your best with it if it's something you've never done before tell him you've never done it before but you'll do the best you can and over time you'll get better and better at what you do and when things slow down and they have to start letting people go you'll be the last guy they want to let go
There's things we teach our kids directly and there's things that they learn from us as they watch us deal with everyday life we call it taught and caught
here's something that I caught we used to plow a lot of snow up in Jersey which is one of the reasons we're not there anymore one night we were out plowing in a blizzard and there was a car in a big snowbank we got the guy out of the car he wanted us to get his car out we didn't have a chain so my father angled the truck in front of the car push the snow down the road a little bit got around back of the car and gently pulled the snow back away from the car so he could get up in there was able gently push the car out towards the middle of the road and get it out of the bank
the guy was aesthetic he reached into his pocket tried to give my father money and my Father wouldn't take it he said just go on home to your family when he got back in the truck I'm a 13 year old kid watching this situation and I said oh he tried to pay you and my father said yeah I couldn't take his money I'm just glad he can get home tonight I'll never forget that as long as I live that's the Richard r Rice that I Knew and I hope when it's my turn to be in the casket cuz we all come here sooner or later my kid stands out in front of it and can share similar things so thanks for everything Dad you know I'll take good care of Mom and because you gave your life to the Lord I don't have to guess whether I'm going to see you or not again I definitely will

Oh Ray, I never thought to check this site. I just read this to your beloved Mom. We both cried. What a beautiful tribute to your father & her beloved husband.
I never got to meet him, I certainly heard so many good things about him. That makes me feel like I know him already. I look forward to meeting him in heaven one day. Reckon there is no snow in heaven for Richard to use heavy equipment for. But he is worshipping Jesus and looking down on his beloved wife & family. Much love, Tanya

I’ve known Mr. Rice all my life. I have so many memories, too many to share.
I do remember Dick and my Dad bought an old school bus, they wanted to make a camper out of it. All though it never happen the intentions were good.
Such a wonder man, a good and respectful man.
Rest eternal Mr. Rice...
