Eugene Calvin Hawkins, 61 of Bedford, passed away Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at his residence. He was born on Friday, March 21, 1952 in Bedford Co., a son of the late Junious William (J. W.) Hawkins and Mable Eula Overstreet Hawkins. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Travis W. Hawkins. Eugene was a truck driver with Quickway Carriers, a member of the Kansas City BBQ Society and was a member of Brookhill Weselyan Church. He also served in the National Guard. Surviving is his wife, Brenda Zimmerman Hawkins; two daughters, Tamara H. Thompson & husband, Keith of Bedford, Erica H. Justice & husband, Tim of Rustburg; five grandchildren, Josh Thompson & a new sibling to arrive in September, Trevor, Ashton & Eric Justice; a brother, Richard Hawkins & wife, Angie of Lynchburg; a sister, Linda H. Styne of Lynch Station; his sister-in-law, Joyce C. Hawkins of Bedford and his good friend, Mike Mallow of Concord. Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 21, 2014 at 10:00 am at Updike Funeral Chapel, Bedford with Rev. Joe Horrell officiating. Interment will follow in Virginia Memorial Park. There will be no visitation at the funeral home, however a reception will follow the interment at Brookhill Wesleyan and the family will receive friends at that time and other times at his home. Arrangements are being handled by Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.
