Obituary of Gerald Albert Ayers

Gerald Albert Ayers, 66 years of age from Moneta, Virginia, made his journey to Heaven Tuesday evening, January 13th, 2015. Gerald had been battling complications from his diabetes since October 15th and had been either in the hospital or Friendship Manor Health & Rehab. Center for the last 12 weeks. Gerald graduated from East Tennessee State University with a degree in History. He loved history of any kind and always enjoyed talking about it to everyone. When he taught at Staunton River High School he would reenact history with paraphernalia that he collected in order to make history real to his students so they could visualize what he was teaching. Gerald owned and operated a hardware business in Moneta for many years and continued to work as owner of Central Virginia Pallet and Stake Co. in Moneta. He was a member of Morgans Baptist Church where he attended all his life. He was preceded in death by his father, Richard Albert Ayers, mother, Lois Wilson Ayers, a sister, Janice Ayers and a brother, David Austin Ayers. He is survived by his brother, Wayne Ayers and his wife, Carolyn; sisters, Carolyn Misenheimer and her husband, Steve, Jane Salibrici Watson and her husband, Allen, and Gail Maxwell and her husband, Jim. Gerald also has numerous nephews, one niece and two great nephews. Special thanks to the staff at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital and Friendship Manor Rehab. who provided his care for the last 12 weeks. We also want to thank the wonderful ladies who sat with him and gave him all the special attention he loved. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 17, 2015 at 11 AM at Morgan’s Baptist Church, in Moneta with Rev. Steve Parker officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday from 6 until 8 PM at Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.
